Use this calculator to estimate your take-home salary in Sydney after Australian income tax, Medicare levy, Medicare Levy Surcharge and, where applicable, HELP or HECS-HELP repayments.

How the Sydney Tax Calculator Works
There is no separate Sydney personal income tax system comparable to the cantonal and municipal system used in Switzerland. If you work in Sydney, your personal income tax is primarily calculated under the Australian federal income-tax system.
Your final take-home pay can also be affected by the Medicare levy, Medicare Levy Surcharge, HELP or other study-loan repayments, salary sacrifice and legitimate tax deductions.
Australian Resident Tax Rates 2026-27
| Taxable income | Marginal tax rate |
|---|---|
| A$0 - A$18,200 | 0% |
| A$18,201 - A$45,000 | 15% |
| A$45,001 - A$135,000 | 30% |
| A$135,001 - A$190,000 | 37% |
| Above A$190,000 | 45% |
The marginal rate applies only to the relevant portion of your taxable income. Moving into a higher bracket does not mean that your entire salary is taxed at that higher rate.
Medicare Levy
Most Australian taxpayers who are liable for Medicare pay a Medicare levy of approximately 2% of taxable income, subject to low-income rules and other circumstances.
Medicare Levy Surcharge
The Medicare Levy Surcharge is separate from the normal Medicare levy. It can apply to higher-income taxpayers who do not have the required level of private patient hospital cover.
For 2026-27, the single threshold begins at A$105,000 and the family threshold begins at A$210,000. The surcharge rates are 1%, 1.25% and 1.5% depending on the applicable income tier.
HELP and HECS-HELP
If you have a HELP or HECS-HELP debt, compulsory repayments can reduce your disposable income once your repayment income reaches the relevant threshold.
For 2026-27, the repayment threshold begins at approximately A$69,528. The current system uses marginal repayment rates rather than simply applying one percentage to the entire income amount.
Superannuation
Employer superannuation should not normally be confused with your cash salary.
For the current system, the compulsory Superannuation Guarantee rate is 12%. Employer super is generally paid into your super fund in addition to your cash salary when the salary is quoted on a plus-super basis.
If a job advertisement says something such as A$100,000 + super, the employee's cash salary is generally A$100,000 and employer super is additional. If an advertisement says the package is A$100,000 including super, the calculation is different.

Your Sydney Salary vs Cost of Living

After calculating your take-home salary, compare it with:
- Sydney rent or mortgage payments
- Groceries
- Public transport
- Car expenses
- Electricity and utilities
- Internet and mobile phone
- Health and insurance costs
